These short stories both share the equal theme of marriage/gender roles, plainly are precise different stories. These stories were selected to be compared because they are both written in the same period of time and show two different issues with women during that time period.

The protagonist of the story is a women Mathilde Loisel. She is middle class women with a working save that is trying to provide for his wife. She now realizes she does not have any fancy jewels to go with her new dress, and they certainly do not have the money for her to go out and buy some. Her husband shows her his selfless manor but even after disbursement all of their savings she is still not happy, which shows how hard she is to please.
